To help people understand Pure Vibration Training, especially when they’ve never heard of it before, we often say “Simply put, it’s just another form of exercise”

 

This is true but re-reading Lloyd’s article from almost a decade ago clearly points out the difference between Voluntary Movement – where the person has to make a definite effort to make their body DO the required movement –

and Involuntary Response – where the body’s inbuilt, automatic response to a situation takes over and does what it needs to do.

 

Like the article says, that doesn’t mean it’s all easy or no effort required. People still have to go to a studio, two or three times a week. They still have to make the effort to get into and hold the positions on the vibration machine

BUT . . .  they don’t have to be already fit or strong, they don’t have to be able to walk a mile fast, they don’t even have to be agile or flexible – some of my best clients are the ones who came initially to try out a session, thinking there’s no way they would be able to do it, and knowing how stiff their body had become from lack of movement or medical or injury issues.  A customer (with injuries and overweight) returned two weeks ago, after a long break for family reasons, and after just 5 sessions the difference in flexibility and her wellbeing is noticeable, her strength also is improved already.

 

THERE IS NO EXCUSE NOT TO EXERCISE


If you live in an area where vibration training is available in a specialised studio, there really is no excuse.

There are several machines that have that name.. take a look at Machine Reviews to find a picture of a similar one  (doesn’t have to have the same Brand Name on the machine). These also come as small machines without handlebars.

Vibration Training and Obesity  What's the real deal? ( published 25/12/2005 )

 

Vibration Training  eh? Sound like an infomercial on steroids doesn’t it, a get rich quick scheme for those who missed out on the Pilates rush. Well you are kinda right , there are plenty of folks who now think this may be their meal ticket. The kind of people who didn’t even know this existed a year ago. But now claim it’s a miracle cure for just about everything and they are ALL experts. Fantastic .Makes you want to run out and jump onto anything that vibrates  . But unfortunately its not that simple, or I would be advising everyone to go stand on their lawn mower.


The truth is Vibra- Train was launched in New Zealand by myself, but not to make a quick buck. I am a mortician by trade and was alarmed at the increasing rate of morbid obesity and type2 diabetes. And instead of sitting around and whinging about it, decided to actually do something. And that something was Vibration Training.


Now morbid obesity is a hard one to tackle, everyone keeps telling them the same thing, go on a diet, exercise more, go on a diet, did I mention exercise more?

Well call me stupid BUT ITS NOT WORKING. We have more professional nutritionists, more diet books, more gyms and more home exercise tools than ever in the history of man. But a higher obesity rate? Now I may just be a mortician but the message is definitely being lost in translation or I wouldn’t be writing this column. What most of the “experts” were failing to do was really put themselves in an overweight persons shoes. What is it like when you feel your weight has already gone too far and there is no light at the end of the tunnel. And also failing to understand, that people only take advice and act on it when they are feeling confident about themselves.


I saw Vibration Training as a way for people to exercise in a new way that they had no preconceptions about. What I mean is this, when you mention “diet” to most people it usually means “go without”. It has a negative connotation attached to it before you even finish the advice. When you mention exercise to someone who hasn’t done it in years, automatically images of puffing and wheezing your way through a workout or even a walk come to mind. And that’s not even mentioning the embarrassment factor. And you don’t have to be obese to feel like this. As we get older everything seems more like an effort. And no one wants to look as though they are dying right? But with Vibration Training we get around all that and do something completely different, that is also more effective. .


The thing about all the above exercise formats is that they use voluntary movement to burn off energy. Is there another way? You bet there is. Its not new and when I finish explaining it to you, you will wonder why it hasn’t been done before. It goes like this, a voluntary reflex is what we use to walk, jump, run etc. During this movement you use about 40% of your muscle cells. You think about it and you move, simple right? But think about this, when someone pushes you, you automatically push back to stop yourself from falling over. How does that happen? As with most things that are normal, we seldom look at it closely. Its called an “Involuntary Stretch Reflex” and its what we use to balance. Our body has an automatic response built into it to try and equal the force being pushed against it ( an eccentric contraction ) . The important thing to note here is your body will recruit approx 100% of you muscle cells during this moment, no expense is spared to stop yourself from falling over. And your muscles are also able to move a lot quicker in this response mode than you ever though possible.

Now the good thing about involuntary responses is firstly, they are involuntary, you don’t have to try. And the second is they are always intact no matter how out of shape you are. So to recap, it happens without me having to try and I am already fit enough to do it? What’s the catch you ask, well its kind of hard in its own way..

But here’s for the good news, the more out of shape you are, the faster the results. Again its exactly the opposite than most training methods we are taught. Now you are wondering around about now, if this is so good, why have I not heard of it before. Simple, lack of education. Involuntary reflexes and Vibration Training is not part of any curriculum in any University, anywhere. So I had to spend 3yrs chasing up this knowledge myself before we opened. I also build machines for athletes and people who are in wheelchairs. So you are not just dealing with one of those people who are jumping on this bandwagon to make a quick buck, If you come into Vibra-Train you will be dealing with the people who brought it here. You will be put on a machine of the best quality . You will be doing a program I designed. And you won’t regret it. Remember I am a mortician, I deal in absolutes, you are either dead or alive. There is no “results may vary” in my vocabulary. If you come to my studios, you do as you are told, you will get results.


And I promise I wont give you any diets or life-style advice. , you already have that in droves . But you watch what happens when you start looking and feeling better. Maybe , just maybe it makes changing those things a bit easier.

Real Vibration Training for Dancers . Why is it the logical choice ?
 
Ok. Jumping and dancing go hand in hand. Sounds simple enough, but jumping comes in two separate muscle contractions and joint control...

 Concentric = jumping
 Eccentric = landing.
 
Jumping seems like hard work, but spiking the perfect landing is actually far more taxing, complexed and dangerous. It is why so many dancers get injured by landing incorrectly. And if you look at the physics it is easy to understand why.
 
A question.....   can you jump 3 feet in the air ? Well if you can, it means when you land you have to control and decelerate 6 times your own body weight. In 1/40th of a second you have to do some amazing tasks, if you do not want to get injured. Which includes getting all the joint angles right and produce enough force fast enough to land in a controlled manner. ......   "controlled" being the operative word here.
 
How does real Vibration Training help ?
 
To explain this is simple.... But firstly get rid of the word "vibration" out of your head. And replace it with strike. As in being hit by something. Hard and heavy, over and over again.. Just like you hit the floor after a high jump.
 
All the vibration platform does is replicate that landing force. Without you having to jump. This allows you to take on a strict landing pose and hold it. You get to perfect joint angles and repeat muscle activation to complete fatigue with no actual risk.
 
So repeated eccentric contractions creating stronger muscles under speed + pressure. And perfected landing function = a more disciplined less injured dancer.            
 
End note:  When we speak of "real" Vibration Training. We mean you can not cheat the physics. The platform must be able to replicate that landing force precisely. While still remaining controlled and not be dampened by your own body weight.  For this to happen, you must be standing on something very solid.
 
There are some very large fancy looking machines that amount to no more than a big foot massage plate . Engineering tests show some begin to fail at 20kg.   Check to make sure the platform part you are standing on is made of steel.

You see any plastic......  carry on till you find the real deal. Do not let some dodgy salesperson talk you round with geek speak.

 The Pivotal industries biggest limitation in Research and Development of more "commercial" machines were themselves.
 
Firstly they spent all their time trying to copy each other.  Including each others mistakes. Like a dog chasing its own tail.
 

Secondly , and more importantly. None of the company leaders actually ran commercial operations. Thousands of customers and all their limitation to deal with.

 I have no idea how you are meant to build a better machine unless you know what its limitations are.

DI-its good to see you’re trying to help people in your community with your “Some Good News Reporting” story.  Pivotal vibration was always going to be limited….I could not imagine a 200kg Pivotal commercial machine.

I’ve looked at a study of the bio-density machine some time ago and it seems to work well for improving bone density, then they use the PowerPlate  -- just for circulation and balance

--- are they saying that’s all the PowerPlate is good for?

WE ARE SPOILT here in New Zealand (some other countries also) – WE GET THOSE RESULTS from One Machine – the Vibra-Train (a pure lineal platform with attached vibrating handlebars, allowing a balanced, handlebar assisted squat, putting the pressure into both the lower and upper body at the same time)

Pure Vibration Training on the Vibra-Train increases bone density, improves circulation, balance – and so much more.

People who start off with a Therapy Program mostly progress to the full Standard Safety Training Program and gain all the benefits of real muscle strength as well.

It’s good the people in Reno have those tools but they are so behind compared with what we can do…     and like Lloyd says $50 a session?

This is just preposterous and I am glad you are exposing it.  Sadly, the NSCA has had Power Plate as a sponsor or partner.  I just do not understand, and the NSCA has been informed of repeated unethical behavior of Power Plate over a number of years, how organizaitons like the NSCA can associate themselves with this type of half truth unscientific marketing propoganda.

Why would they use an expensive eccentric compression machine. That seems top of the line. Then get people to use a substandard product like Power Plate .
 
How can they justify charging $50 per session.
 

This is typical Power Plate behavior.  Go into a new area, charge like a wounded bull. Get people to fluff around on the machines. Then when people wise up. close and move to a new area.

Why would a Tennis or Squash player use Vibra-Train ?

 
Vibration Training sounds new and fancy, but the idea has been used by athletes and martial artists that only want to training with their body weight for as long as sport has been around.
 
I will explain....
 
The primary "stopping, catching, changing direction or landing" muscle reaction is called an eccentric contraction. So to put it simply, jumping is concentric, landing is eccentric. When people start a sport they concentrate on the obvious, throwing, jumping, running forward etc....   but as they master their chosen sport or discipline they tend to look for weaknesses that may cause injury, and try to correct or strengthen that movement.
 
A classic old school example of this was something they call a drop stop , or drop jump. This is where an athlete climbs up onto a box, drops off and tries to land in a perfect squat. Over and over again.( very time consuming but very effective )  This not only creates a very fast powerful muscle reaction, but also helps with gait control ( how you control your movements, especially during impacts ) .
 
This combination has been proven to reduce injury and increase performance. So why is it not more popular ?
 
Well quite simply weight training came along in the 60s and its popularity meant most strength and conditioning coaches slowly gravitated towards this form of training. And it indeed had advantages over the older methods. Mainly it was faster and took less hands on attention to detail.

 But it also had its downsides, essentially being it did not engage the fast twitch reactions ( as it would be dangerous to move a weight too quickly )  and sometimes created unwanted bulk. So not perfect for all sports.
 
So how does Vibra-Train differ... ?
 
To understand how Vibration Training works for athletes, the first thing to do is forget about the word "vibration". It is easier to just think of it as a moving object. In this case a heavy object moving quickly back and forward.  The idea is simple, have contact with the object and try to control it. Whilst keeping optimum joint angles  through disciplines poses.

Eg.... The Push-Up is actually more like catching a medicine ball. The Squat is like dropping off a chair and spiking the perfect landing .etc... all standard well known positions.

The difference .....
 
It all happens at 40 stops a second.... Which sounds fast, but is actually the speed your reactions are designed to work at. It has all the benefits of the old school style eccentric  contraction training techniques. Its just reducing a whole body workout to about 12mins. As opposed to a few hours per muscle group in done with a ball or box.
 
As a bonus the large platforms can also be used for very effective massages and stretches. This is called Vibration Therapy and has its own long history of positive effects.
 
Who uses our equipment for the above reasons already......  The Breakers ( for 3 years now ), Dance studios in Australia, High jumpers , lightweight boxers and a myriad of other individual pursuit athletes.      

 
When you come in, we have a very disciplined set program you will attempt to master. And we can work around existing injuries if you have any.
 

Oh yes. And we love a skeptic. So if it sounds all a bit too good to be true, come in and experience it at least once. I can guarantee that your own bodies reaction will speak volumes. It is an undeniable experience.

Medium Energy Lineal

Based on the Higher Energy platforms, but lighter and are usually made of plastic or tin so they give slower, less consistent results. This would make up a majority of Lineal units produced and range in size from no larger than your foot to 3 feet wide. Size may be no indication of quality and force so a test drive is essential. These tend to be the favorite “confusing ground” for marketers and lots of broken promises and machines are what’s left behind. These machines will work to a degree, but depending on the quality go from good to useless, especially if you think you have purchased something greater than it is. Do your homework, home use OK, but business use a big NO. Note: The vibration is meant to be Lineal, which means straight up and down, but some may actually wobble which they sometimes promote as “3D” . This just means low quality/uncontrolled.

 

 

So if that description fits your needs and budget. I see no reason not to buy it. ( note . It is basically a Power Plate knock off )

Over the last few years Walter Matthews of Perth , previously Auckland N.Z. ( he was with VIBRA-NATION Pty and , VIBRATION CAFE, but now with The  LABODYTORY and changes the name often)  has been making some quite outstanding claims about people he has been in business or worked with. 

 
 

The accusations are too disturbing to publish here, but needless to say they are designed to ruin any persons reputation that does not want to go along with his highly unethical business practices. 


Unfortunately it has been discovered this is a pattern of behavior that has been repeated over many years and many past jobs. Particularly targeting Woman whom he gets into a relationship with and gets to fund his business ventures. Leaving heavy debt behind when he walks out. 
3 Vibration Training studios to date. 

It would be wise, if you intend to do business with this man. To do some due diligence and get him to produce tax records for all his previous employment. So a proper background check can be done.

What you do find is the parent company can sometimes have a bad rep...
 
Eg....   Using fake / confusing specs. Using research to sell machines that actually state the specs ( HZ )  needed to get good results. But then failing to tell you their unit has no such HZ ratings .
 
 
Or  giving out advice like " needs to be used for a minimum of 10 minutes (2-3 times a day)," 
 
Sometimes telling people just standing on the machine will help them lose weight.
 

You may find that is the case here.

Hi,

Ive been reading reviews for the Sunny Health&Fitness Y. 08 Crazy Fit Massager. People said it toned legs and help get rid of cellulite while used for 2 sessions of 10 minutes a day, for several months, only by standing on the platform.  There were no claims of weight loss. Do you think these reviews could be realistic ? I think that is a linear system, not sure of it.

I take offense to that. I was bullied without reason as a kid. These people we discuss are often repeat offenders of basic ethics and laws who pray on the less educated. .
 

I have yet to "pick on" an innocent party.

Using your analogy of bullies in a school playground Lloyd would be the exact person you’d want to have around. He’d be the one who kicked the bully in the backside as he threw them out the back gate.

This is an industry website with a number of companies, Drs , academics and individuals contributing over its long history. This forum has two tasks. To report on latest industry news and answer the odd serious question by consumers.

Unfortunately because so many companies are dishonest negative news is reported here and only here. The consumer will often be kept in the dark too long to help but we do report good news and reviews as well  see my previous post.  

Company websites that only promote their own products do exist. But they do not look like this. So maybe you did not read the whole site.

Try talking about what your company does better than everyone else rather than demeaning others to make yourself look better. In the short history of the Vibration Training industry so far we have had our fair share of try-hard , instant experts who used to sell "whatever" before they thought this industry was a get rich quick scheme.
 
The kinds of tactics they used to make a sale at any cost damaged our industry and I find these people personally repulsive.
 

So we celebrate  report every time they have one less country to pray on.
