My Challenge to Monty Betham

You put down Vibra-Train – Now come in for a session and see what it’s really like.

I’m totally sick of hearing about other trainers who put down Vibra-Train and vibration training in general.  Almost none have ever fronted up and come into the studio. The occasional one that does come in gets their ‘arse’ kicked so hard by the machines that they shut their mouths up very fast.

Last week in New Zealand we saw the final in a Kardashian styleTV series called “The Ridges”. This last episode showed the KFC Grandfather of All Fight Nights fight between Jaime Ridge and Rosanna Arkle.  Earlier, back in episode 2, we watched a discussion between Jaime and her trainer/coach Monty Betham.  Monty tells us, ““when she said her fitness regime consisted of yoga and vibra-train I was very worried”.

That and other comments I’ve been hearing have seriously annoyed me.

So there’s my reply and my challenge to Monty Betham to Man Up and Front Up – I’m really looking forward to having him visit the studio to do a full, regular, Vibra-Train session.

After Mark Verstegen and his cohorts at Athletes Performance kicked me off their website several years ago for just asking questions about Power Plate on their website, none of them would answer or return calls.  This includes Mark, Craig Friedman, and a man they called "Ace" who was helping run their website at the time.  They are "partners" with Power Plate.  Before the Power Plate incident, I used to correspond with Mark and thought he was ok.  It seems everybody associated with Power Plate is as "dodgy" as can be.

When I contacted the actual studio. They hung up on me.
 
When I contacted Power Plate Int. directly about my concerns over this type of behavior . Asking if they were so desperate for sales they will risk someone's health. .
 
This is the official response I received....
 
 
" Are we so desperate for sales?  Or did a customer chose not to provide information on their contra-indication?  Or have you another bone to pick? "
 
 
This is what I have learnt about Power Plate over the years. If she had died. Power Plate would have hired an army of lawyers to make sure she was to blame.

Watch Power Plate put an anorexic person very close to death on a machine. When her Doctor has already banned all exercise due to possible cardiac arrest.
 
Yes. The Power Plate instructor was fully aware of the situation. And this was done in a "Authorized Power Plate Training Center"  (. Not some random gym. ) 
 
We managed to close this center down. But the "greed over wellbeing" mentality goes wherever Power Plate goes.

Reply to Jon regarding PP bankruptcy, indeed very likely, PP is going bankrupt in Europe at the speed of light, France is gone, just discovered Belgium is bankrupt as wel since a couple of weeksl, hit Power Plate bankruptcy in Google and you'll get loads of hits

Wow, Can’t believe what I have heard and read about Monty Betham making judgment on something that he has not tried, what’s up with that? I was always taught that a man with an experience is never at the mercy of a man with an opinion….

After running my own vibration training studio for the past 6 years, 3 of them as Vibra-Train, I find it amusing and offensive that people are too lazy to check out a true result based workout.

Hell some of my best advocates are qualified personal trainers that are in business for them self.

Come on Monty be a man and go meet Lloyd and give it a go, I promise you would be welcomed and surprised.

- I am an athlete who came to 'try-out' Vibra Train as reccommended by my coach at the time - Angela Mckee.
 
- Lloyd has taken me under his wing and provided me with free access to train anytime at his studio in the CBD.
 
- He has also given me countless hours trying to educate me on any questions I've had.
 
- I've been able to bring in any one of my friends and they've received student discounts. Also he's let me bring in a training buddy to train with me for free.
 
- Not only just athletes, but also any disabled or obese people are also given a 'free-pass' to come in and use his machines to help make a benefit to their lives. THIS IS NOT A MARKETING TECHNIQUE. He could easily be charging these customers as well as myself, as we will demand this form of assistance to our daily lives.
 
- As I understand it, the mission of "Vibra-Train" is quite clear. It was built to help fight obesity as its sole objective. The machines have been designed that minimal 'thinking' effort is needed, as well as no natural athletic ability required.. Evidenced through the very simple "Safety Program".
 
- Lloyd also has machines working out in South Auckland to help fight obesity in this area.
 
From such a relatively small business, the focus and amount of effort spent on Philanthropy as well as conducting his entire enterprise with the highest ethical values I've encountered (as evidenced through his online uncensored website discussion forum) I am truly impressed and inspired by Lloyds efforts.
 
- Resultantly, from the machines proved usefulness, many other users have now incorporated this training into their lives.
 
- It has helped me astronomically. My body has become incredibly balanced, my injury problems have largely disappeared, my strength has improved and many more things that have assisted my daily life. Ultimately to say that Lloyd and his machines have helped me, would be an understatement.
 
For anyone to disrespect Lloyd and his mission does not makes sense to me. He is driven by something that isn't money - his passion. From my personal interactions with him over the last two years, I have seen this first hand by the sacrifices he makes in his own life to devote himself to this.

Bob.....  Yes plenty of experience with hip replacements.
 
 Once they are allowed to walk. The seated Therapy pose is recommended.
 
 Then when starting squats, load bearing side handle-bars are required. As per the poster in this article...

Some lineal manufacturers list hip replacements as a contra indication.

What is your experience and recommendation to someone with a recent

hip replacement operation who wishes to continue vibration training

Rumor has it that Power Plate North America is filing for bankruptcy.  There are two major fitness equipment shows here.  IHRSA and Health and Fitness Business. They showed up to IHRSA in March but not to Health and Fitness business last month.  That is the first time I have not seen them there.  Some of their dealers say that they are restructuring. Has any one else heard about this.  They are owned by a larger investment company   http://www.whitney.com/investments.html.  I am sort of shocked that the bigger company would let them sink. I know that they spent millions on marketing but I figured they had done millions in sales as well.  The Doctor Mercola site alone sold at least a thousand machines.  Can anyone confirm this or is it just a rumor.

Vibration Therapy – results of a Study of a Single Session on ankle plantarflexion spasticity and gait performance in patients with chronic stroke

I don’t have access to the full study so I don’t know what machine brand or type was used or what the single session consisted of - but the abstract conclusion says: These results suggest that a single session of whole body vibration training can reduce ankle plantarflexion spasticity in chronic stroke patients, thereby potentially increasing ambulatory capacity”.

There’s nothing new here, it’s the sort of results we see every week in people with gait and other problems.  And of course a study is only as good as the parameters set

BUT I’m happy to see the academic world catching up with what’s already happening.

Note: this study is using Vibration Therapy – just one use of Vibration Machines

What is Vibra-Train for...?

I  have read the article on Sprinting "No marked improvement for
sprinters"  I found it interesting and I'm not knocking it as it seems a
very constructive report based on correct method of testing, however -
it's like any testing - what were the parameters used?

This test used very good sprinters - my question is - at the top of your
game what should you expect to see gained in 5 weeks?

Secondly what machines were used for the test? I have used Vibro-gyms,
Power plates and the Vibra-train machines and they are like comparing 2
litre, 3 litre and 8 litre engines so I'm not surprised by these results
The Vibra-Train units have been developed at a different level. Plus
what were the exercises used during the training.

I am always looking for ways to naturally increase strength and my event
is jumping so I have found the Vibra-Train machines fantastic. Please
note that I also sprint now but did little before vibration training as
I didn't feel I was fast enough.

When you have jumped as high as your expectations and normal training
have let you, you seek alternative safe and natural methods for the
smallest and hardest gains which take you to new personal bests at the
top end.  After four years of 1-2 cm increments I had a 4cm gain in my
first year and a further 2cm gain before bruising a heel in competition.


Had I been able to continue at the same rate I'm sure I would have had a
4 cm increment for 2006.

I am running faster and bounding further. One of the main reasons for
this is that my coach and Lloyd sat down and we learnt about vibration
training and Lloyd learnt about the high jump technique.  Lloyd also
came down and watched me jump and was able to design a programme with
exercises unlike exercises one would normally do in commercial
environment.

In fact I am sure with the other machines would not have received the
gains that I have so far, in fact if I am away and have to use another
machine I feel like I'm driving a Mini maybe I have just been spoiled
too much? 

I have two junior athletes training with me who have never lifted
weights and have increased their 100m time by 1 second and a 10cm
increase in the high jump. Yes they are young but the vibration training
is the only power work they have done. It's safe if it's supervised and
the young athletes have had no injuries, in fact it's the balance and
stride length gains which seem to be the most beneficial right now.

You must remember that we have been on a longer programme then 5 weeks
and our exercises are developing as we gain more strength. It's too easy
to take a small sample test result and draw conclusions from this. You
can design any test to get any answer you want. The real test is in
continued use and the end performance. This shouldn't stop you further
investigating vibration training for sprinting gains. But before you go
too far down the track talk to Lloyd and make sure you have the right
information and machines for the results you require.  

I know the test was for sprinters and I am a jumper but from what I have
seen from my young athlete's leaves me in no doubt that vibration
training does offer benefits and I would love the same test done again
in conjunction with Lloyd's machines and his exercises. Food for
thought!

I am a Vibra Train loyalist.. I used Vibra Train to prepare for both national and international highjump events,  2005 to 2007. Under Lloyds supervision I used his machines with a special compression program to increase my strenght and power without gaining weight. When I went to the Melbourne Common Wealth Games Lloyd sent a machine to the venue for me to use. I was a bronze medalist in my early 30s and in the best shape of my life.

Now as an ex athlete working full time, I pop in at least 2 times a week to maintain a toned athletic body. Lloyds program is short and intense, your out of the studio within 30minutes. You get amazing results without spending hours in the gym.

I recommend Vibra Train to all my friends and athletes.

A quick Google search "Powerplate International" brings up a page titled  WHY WE ARE THE LEADER

Very wishful thinking on the part of  New Zealand PowerPlate website

Leaders keep their brand operational especially when it's very existence is to benefit people's health and fitness. Yet where are PP studios in NZ. Where are all the people who are getting benefits from Poweraplate training in NZ. GONE Closed Down. 

Meanwhile VibraTrain keeps on growing every day. And as well as having paying customers, at way less price than PowerPlate, VibraTrain gives free sessions to the most needy in our community. I'm proud to be part of this. Apologises to Lloyd if this sounds like bragging but each day brings new challenges and new people into the studio where I work. It's very exciting and very rewarding And I don't mean money.

I have a muscle wasting disease.  I read in the muscular dystophy magazine that Loyd Shaw was kindly offering to give free workouts to people like me.  I have been going 2 to 3 times a week for the last two and a half years and have gained muscle strength.  When I started I could only complete a 20second squat but now I am doing the full program plus a few extra exercises to help my particular problems, such as weakness in my neck.  I feel that Monty should come and see for himself before he makes any judgements.  Come and see. Give it a try.  I feel much better now, that is for sure.

Thanks Loyd I do really appreciate what you have done for me.

Well I’m issuing a challenge to Monty Betham to come into Vibra-Train Auckland City and do a full regular session.  Are you up to it, Monty?

I watched “The Ridges” first episode where it was said that Monty was dismayed to hear that Jaime was doing Yoga and Vibra-Train for fitness and since then I’ve heard from several people that Monty dismisses Vibra-Train.

As a Vibra-Train instructor I see all sorts of people from the really unfit, morbidly obese (and those with disabilities) right through to people who are Olympic standard (some medal winners) and they all get a REAL workout and REAL results at Vibra-Train. 

I’ve previously worked in a gym and brought to Vibra-Train other gym instructors and personal trainers, including those who had laughed and held the pig-headed opinion that no one could get fit from using a vibration machine. They soon changed their minds – one session was all it took.

I want to see the expression on your face, Monty, after a 2 minute SuperSquat. Come on, don’t be a meathead and make unqualified statements, come in a prove yourself!

Just to make this perfectly clear. Vibra-Train is an anti-obesity campaign. Prevention and possible solution.
 
What I am waiting to see is if Monty Betham is man enough to stand by his disrespectful comments, or will he hide behind his family and charity.

Hi I too like Debbie have been training in Muay Thai. I stopped competing a couple of years ago due to work and family committments. In the past I have trained to international level. I am a former NZ champion. Since stopping my kickboxing and gym training I started to fell quite tired and lethargic. I found it hard to get the motivation to go to the gym or do other exercise that I use to love to do.  I went with Debbie to vibratrain and liked it as there is no excuse for not doing10mins exercise. I was concerned about my lack of fitness and not wanting to exercise. With vibratraining I have started to feel healthier and gain some strength to even do the odd kickboxing class again. With a busy lifestyle and working all day with special needs kids it is a good way to get stronger fitter and healthier a bit quicker without having to spend hours at the gym. It seems to help rehabilitate old injuries too. I would strongly recommend trying vibratrain.

As a Vibra-Train studio owner I am very disappointed to say the least to hear that a well known celebrity and former professional athlete Monty Betham  is actively criticising Lloyd Shaws work to help fight obesity and other health problems in New Zealand. I have been involved with Lloyd Shaw for over 8 years, in that time i have been astounded at his drive, persistence and dedication to giving up his time and money to achieve this. Much of the work he does in this area is done for free, and I cannot understand why anyone who truly has the health and welfare of other people at heart would do this? Surely the end result is the most important thing here? I can only question Monty Bentham’s real motivation if this is true.

Vibratrain Supporter...

I am new to Vibratrain, have been doing Vibratrain now for the last two months.  I come from a strong Muay Thai,Thai Boxing background, having concentrated on the fitness side of the sport as well as the competition for well into 20 years now.

A few years ago, I sufferred a serious injury, breaking my leg, ankle and foot, which meant having to go through 3 surgeries, having 11 screws, two rods and one plate put into my leg ankle and foot  to stabilise it.  This meant I lost 40 percent flexibility and lost basic movement.   

As a result of lack of exercise, poor diet and injury, I plonked on a lot of weight, and my tone quickly faded.  

Since doing Vibratrain for this short period of time, I have gained back flexability, strength and tone... I have lost 4kg without much effort at all..... my ankle does not ache or swell and I am noticing my body shape change.  

I could easily find an excuse not to go to the gym and workout for an hour, or an hour and a half.. but there is no excuse for not having time to participate in a 10 minute or 12minute workout on the Vibratrain machine.

If there is a skeptic out there, I would recommend trying Vibratrain before making a judgement on it....  Results are what matters, if i had the choice to take up working out in a gym for an hour to an hour and a half every second day, and Vibratrain....   Vibratrain would win HANDS DOWN.....  I highly recommend for all to give it a go.

It has been reported to me multiple times a well known trainer here in NZ called Monty Betham  has been denigrating my work for the last few years. But cant obviously be bothered to even come in and see what Vibra-Train does and represents. ( Even though he works in the same city and could have dropped in anytime ).
 
Now considering I have been doing free work since 2004 in the area of people with either muscle wasting conditions, medical or obesity issues that would inhibited them from exercising ( in the normally prescribed way PTs are limited to ). I am sick of people like him trash talking my alternative program just because they cant understand it.
 
 
Now I only entered the fitness industry to address issues I was seeing in the Mortuary, issues in my opinion the Health & Fitness Industry  and Medical fraternity, had completely failed to comprehend and account for in its "solutions"  And this is not the first time I have faced this issue..   
 
But a few points aggravate the situation .....
 
(1) He has influence and many people respect him and his opinion
 
(2) He is an athlete so fully understands how the "arm chair critic"  annoys people with actual experience.   
 
(3) This guy is meant to be on the same side as me fighting Obesity. He was involved in setting up a charity group in my city to fight obesity ( good motive for rubbishing my work maybe ? )    .
 
 
I have been told my request ( re challenge ) for him to come and put his money where his mouth is, has been sent to his "agent". But I am pretty sure he didn't ask his agent's permission before trash talking my work. 
 
This is the "official" response so far,  a complete unambiguous denial ...
 
        " no one within our organisation let alone Monty has any negative thoughts whatsoever on Vibra-train or any other techniques or initiatives"..
 
 
Someone is full of BS. Either the people repeating to me Monty's comments or the official comment is a lie.
 
 
 If it turns out to be the later I plan to use this situation to highlight the unethical and uneducated nature of some people out there. And highlight it is only a lack of effort that creates such ignorance.

Better than a Power Plate. But you will be pushing its limits unfortunately.
 
Power Plates Pro lost full function at anything over 40kg. Fit-Vibe Pro will fair much better .
 
 
Having said that, following a safety program on any device should give some results.
 
  Just be very careful of your joint angles and maybe find something to take load through your arms during your squats.
 
 
 
Regarding CHCH and Power Plate. I have no idea why any business down there trusts them, with their history of dishonestly and selling shoddy equipment. Very strange situation

As I am 160kgs, I need a robust machine to train on.
I would love to work out at a Vibra-Train studio, but as I live in Chch, my options are limited (it seems like all we have here are Power-Plate studios for women)
 
What are your thoughts about the FitVibe Excel Pro machine ?
