I checked in with Dr. Jeff McBride yesterday.  McBride wrote a short summary on vibration training for the NSCA a while back.  He is a professor and colleague of Dr. David Nieman at Appalachian State.  Dr. Nieman is a member of the Power Plate Scientific Advisory Board.  Some of you may recall I reported on this after speaking with Dr. McBride last summer on the www.vibrationtraining.net site before Peter Davis bought the site.  This site has just been sitting there since Davis bought it.  I have an inkling Davis bought the site to keep Lloyd and others quiet as the site was getting quite popular.

Anyway, McBride said the same thing he told me last summer.  He does not see vibration training as doing anything that normal strength training does not already do.  In regard to Dr. Nieman being listed on the Power Plate Advisory Board what happened was Power Plate gave them money to do a couple studies and in return Nieman let them use his name on the Advisory Board.  McBride, in contrast to what Power Plate says on their website under the Dr. Nieman listing for their Advisory Board, says there is not any Power Plate Research Center at Appalachian State nor are there plans for he or Nieman to do any more studies on Power Plate.  So, Power Plate is still up to their lies.  It is clear this company has a culture of deceit.  They are misleading the public on their website again.  I have caught them lying multiple times myself over the last two or three years.

We have to keep in mind that the internet is available to just about everyone and there’s no restriction on who can write up articles on many websites.  I’ve watched over two years and I believe many “current trends” articles are written solely to gain English Language writing skills.  Two I recently found; the writer has poor writing skills, no experience of, and poor research of Vibration Training.

This does not; of course excuse those who claim to be Fitness Gurus or knowledgeable about exercise equipment and methods - like the link posted below - but then are lazy in their research, posting articles with errors yet expecting their followers to praise them.  They are the ones I will strongly oppose.

The mere fact they are still concentrating on Fq and Amplitude means they are still suckers to marketing.

I have said it before, and will say it again. These academics who are too lazy to do their homework before their research only hold our industry back.

John Posted On:2010-01-05 05:44:54

Another interesting study by Cook et al. in JSCR looking at amplitudes and frequencies for WBV is at www.nlm.nih.gov, click on PubMed, and type in vibration exercise as search terms.  As more research is done by the academics, things will gradually get sorted out.   The problem is this takes time.  I have felt for some time that Lloyd is ahead of the curve.

Marry Christmas and Happy New Year to all you...

Here's to a good 2010 for our industry and all its ethical players.

We still have so much work ahead of us and I know it seems daunting. But by helping each other unselfishly and working towards common goals, we can mold this industry into something not only very successful, but something we can all be proud of.

Heads down, asses up. Work hard and enjoy the rewards.

A recent study by Humphries et al. in Aviat Space Environ Med 2009 Dec indicates WBV may help women increase bone deposition, decrease bone resorption and may also be important for young women to develop peak bone mass thus helping negate the possibilty of osteoporosis later in life.  The abstract is at www.nlm.nih.gov, click on PubMed, and type in vibration exercise as search words.

Sydney – accommodation help needed

My son is moving to Sydney end of January to study (PhD) at UNSW.  He’s looking for a small 1 bedroom unit ($200-350) in the Kensington or surrounding area or a flatmate situation with mature (20’s) working or quiet students.  Or if anyone can offer him a room for a month while he gets set up with accommodation, would be great.  He wont wreck your place and unlike me, he doesn’t party.  Please reply in here or email me through Lloyd at Vibra-Train, thanks.

Thanks folks for the kind words,  kinda funny seeing yourself on Youtube.

Hope everybody has a good holiday season.  I am working right through at the studio and mortuary but will still enjoy some time outside in the sun.

Part 6 - the final segment in our first series of Vibration Training Videos is now live on YouTube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD63aNW998E

In this one Lloyd Shaw (Mr Vibra-Train) talks about “Give it a go!”,  where to go to try vibration training, what to do before you go and what to expect during the session.

The other parts are all there too, see the link in previous post or just click on the VibraTrain name by the this video.

There’s so much information contained in these 6 videos I encourage everyone to view them. For people wanting to learn more about vibration training its all there.

For trainers and studio owners I can guarantee you’ll either learn something new or you’ll get such a good review of your knowledge it will help you explain it to customers.

The final word from Lloyd in this video when asked “... if it’s so good, what’s the catch?”  He replies; “It’s hard work!”  In other parts of the series he’s quick to point out that; “anyone can do it, we even have an 84year old who does a 3 minute (side handlebar assisted) super-squat.”

It does mean that only one arm gets worked at a time, but really that is the only limitation.  I think you will find it will open up much wider variations of that pose , and help you get the best out of the machine.

Gabriel Posted On:2009-12-20 15:18:39

Thanks Lloyd. That is an interesting idea. I will give it a go.

Safety Push-Up for Pivotal Platforms

(a)  Get a mat the same height as the platform.
(b)  Place it along side ( not in front ) of the platform.
(c)  Go into the standard pose, but with one arm on the platform, the other on the mat.

This position has a few advantages over the standard pose....

(a) The amplitude of the arms/pec being worked out can be adjusted easily.
(c) You are no longer constrained by the dimension of the platform, so you can go as far apart as needed to properly engage the pecs.
(d) It greatly decreases the side-to-side movement of the neck. Not only making it feel more comfortable, but actually safer.

Gabriel Posted On:2009-12-20 14:57:30

Lloyd,

I was wondering if you had any input for me. I am working through the safety program on the vibraflex and am bumping into a slight snag with the pushup. The need to utilize a wider hand position is pushing into amplitudes that are very difficult for my patients and clients with limited strength to hold. The narrow grip, which is much more tolerable works well but is less anatomically desireable for targeting the pecs as they are shortened. I have built an accessory that utilizes a wide plank and two low profile feet set at position 2. This seems to work  well, but requires rather thick matting on the feet to stay in place at higher frequencies. This, obviously, dampens the vibration. I recall you mentioning some ideas you had thought up for the upper body positions on pivotal and was curious whether or not you would care to elaborate.

Happy Holidays Everyone.

Good Luck Tom.  :-)

Tom Posted On:2009-12-19 10:22:33

By the way about the TZone. Driving to my Chiropractor today I heard a radio commercial (they're pretty active on the radio) about wining free workout coupons (or something like that missed the beginning) and their motto at the end of the announcement. Getting an hour workout in 10 min. What a load.

Thanks Lloyd,

I know I'm asking for impossible comparisons. Martin from Bodyshaker got back to me. However the disadvantage of being so far away from their factory, exchange, shipping, duty and taxes... puts the Bodyshaker about 1.5K CDN more expensive then Wave. Which is local to Canada. So I'm going with the Wave.

Also I spoke with my Chiropractor and showed him the safety program printout. He said because of my condition where the disk is protruding in the center and in the back of the spine cord he would stay away from any exercises that puts undo pressure on my back while leaning forward (he used more fancy terms, this is my explanation). So that translated to staying away from stretch 6, Shoulder Press.

Thank you so much for all the help and time you've taken to answer my questions. I might bug you in the future once I get my machine and progress. I'll monitor the discussion board ;)

Why does this industry get more than its fair share of A-holes. They must constantly be on the look out for new things and confusion, so they can sneak in and make some money.

DebPelletier Posted On:2009-12-19 08:39:07

My apologies, it was not Dan Fivey, Connelly.

DebPelletier Posted On:2009-12-19 05:33:27

Your suspicions are correct Lloyd. We are helping a Studio get set up in St.Johns and he had correspondence with Fivey are recently as this summer out in Eastern Canada. We advised him to steet clear and he ended up going with the Wave.
